Through family and friends, Maria came into contact with works of art and the art market at an early age and spent a lot of time at major international art auctions, fairs and exhibitions. After school, she studied art history at the University of Münster. In 2012 she published her dissertation, a survey of the complete works of the painter Johann Boeckhorst, who belonged to the circle of Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Anthony van Dyck. The dissertation was awarded the „Princess of Gallitzin Prize.“ During her studies Maria worked at Christie’s Amsterdam. She decided to follow her passion for art and started her own gallery, Galerie Galen, in 2011. Since 2015, she has also been teaching courses at the University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster, Germany, focusing on the art market.

Gallery

Galerie Galen is located in a listed historic building that was built in 1825. The house has been owned by the Galen family for more than a century. The paintings are exhibited in the historical vaulted cellar, where originally colonial goods were stored. Now you can admire the paintings of old masters in a unique atmosphere.

Galen Gallery deals with old master paintings and specializes in Flemish and Dutch paintings of the 17th century. Each painting is carefully researched and, when possible, appraised by an expert on the artist or period.

Galerie Galen has participated in international art fairs since its inception. Museums, such as the Rubenshuis Antwerp, as well as important private collectors have purchased from Galerie Galen. Several objects have also been lent to museums such as the Preußen Museum Minden and the Stadtmuseum Münster.

We advise outstanding private collections and some important corporate collections in Europe. We would also be happy to assist you in building an art collection. Outstanding Old Master paintings are always on the art market and collections can still be built, and surprisingly at relatively low cost. Compared to the enormous prices achieved for modern and contemporary art, Old Masters can offer particularly good value for money.
