Through family and friends Maria came in contact with works of art and the art market at an early age and spent much time at major international art auctions, trade fairs and exhibitions. After school she studied Art History at Münster University, Germany. In 2012 she published her PhD thesis, a survey of the complete works of the painter Johann Boeckhorst who belonged to the circle of Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Anthony van Dyck. The dissertation was awarded the „Fürstin von Gallitzin-Preis“. During her studies, Maria worked at Christie’s Amsterdam. Since 2015 Maria gives a course at Münster University “Introduction to the Art Market”. She decided to follow her passion for art by starting an independent dealership in 2011 and founded Galen Gallery.
Galen Gallery is located in a heritage-protected historic building which was built in 1825. The house has belonged to the Galen family for more than a century. The paintings are exhibited in the historic vaulted cellar, where colonial produce was originally stored. Now you can admire old master paintings in a unique atmosphere.
Galen Gallery deals with Old Master Paintings and is specialized in Flemish and Dutch 17th paintings. Every painting is carefully researched and if possible inspected by an expert on the artist or period.
Since the beginning Galen Gallery participates at international art fairs. Museums, such as the Rubenshuis Antwerp, as well as important private collectors have purchased from Galen Gallery. Several objects have also been on loan to museums e.g. Preußen Museum Minden and Stadtmuseum Münster.
We are happy to give advice for building a Old Master Collection. Excellent Old Master paintings are still available and collections can still be built, and surprisingly, at relatively low cost. Compared to the huge prices modern and contemporary art are fetching, Old Masters may prove especially good value for money.
The gallery also offers the evaluation of objects, advice regarding conservation as well as a general consulting service for buyers and sellers at auctions.
