Study of a Tree
Drawing, Sanguine, 17.6 x 14.5 cm
Provenance: German Private Collection
Price: 500 €
A mighty tree trunk, together with a tangle of roots and branches, forms the sole subject of this drawing. The artist, like some other Dutch and Flemish artists in the 17th century, was fascinated by such natural forms. This tree could have been encountered by the draftsman, unknown to us, on his journey to the Swiss and Tyrolean Alps. It combines the attentive eye of a naturalist with the energy of Baroque art.
