Gottfried Libalt was a German painter of Mannerism, active in Hamburg, Krakow and Vienna.
In the main church of St. Peter in Hamburg there are two paintings from his hand. Other works can be found in the Czech Republic (Nebillau Castle), Slovakia and Austria, among other places.Libalt was especially known for his still lifes, which he successfully sold to the Austrian nobility.
His typical impasto and flaky application of paint is complemented in this painting by a subdued coloration with ocher as well as green tones and is loosened up with a few dabs of color in the area of the grapes.
The painting is listed under number 281378 in the Rijksarchief voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in Den Haag (RKD).
