So far, little is known about life and work of Jan van der Bent. He may have been a pupil of Philips Wouwerman as his oeuvre shows strong parallels to this artist.
The present painting is based on a work by Wouwerman, today in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. There are several versions of this painting but the execution and the condition of the present work is remarkable.
